What to Wear for Your Family Photography Session

There are so many things to consider when planning a family photoshoot. And while your photographer will absolutely help you pick a perfect time and location for your session, it’s often up to you to pick out what your family is going to wear. But where do you even start?

  1. Make sure your outfits go together, but don’t match: Aim for a cohesive look instead of perfectly matching outfits by choosing a colour palette or ‘theme’ for your session. This allows for visual harmony without looking overly staged or uniform.

  2. We love colour: If there’s a colour palette you love, please, please don’t be afraid to incorporate it into your family session! Darker tones, jewel tones and fall colours typically photograph best (I almost always recommend avoiding bright, vibrant colours).

  3. Blend patterns and textures: Patterns and textures that go together can add a really interesting and beautiful depth to your photos; however, you want to make sure that the patterns/textures aren’t overwhelming and/or distracting.

  4. Say NO to logos and graphics: If possible, avoid logos and graphics when picking out your family’s outfits. You want the focus of the image to be on you and your family—not your partner’s band tee!

  5. Don’t forget your accessories: You can add A LOT of personality and interest to your photos via your accessories. Let your family’s personalities shine through via the small details that make their unique style.

  6. It’s never a bad idea to go classic: Yeah, yeah, trendy outfits are tempting and all, but it’s important to consider timeless options too. Remember, it’s always easy to pick out the family photos taken in the 70s, 80s and 90s, just on the outfits alone (of course if that’s your style, rock it!).

And of course, I’m always here to help! If you’re unsure of what your family should wear, send me your ideas and I can help point you in the right direction (and even send some inspo pictures).

If you’re on the lookout for a family or lifestyle photographer in Calgary, AB or the surrounding area, let’s chat! I’d absolutely love to connect with you and capture those precious moments that will make you smile for years to come.
